International Trade Minister Van Loan Signs Memorandum of Understanding on Youth Mobility During Visit to Costa Rica

(No. 272 – August 27, 2010 – 7:20 p.m. ET) The Honourable Peter Van Loan, Minister of International Trade, today signed a memorandum of understanding on youth mobility between Canada and Costa Rica under the Government of Canada’s International Experience Canada initiative.

“This youth mobility initiative will offer Canadian and Costa Rican youth the opportunity to gain a better understanding of each other’s languages, culture and society through a unique travel, life and work experience,” said Minister Van Loan. “The increased people-to-people ties that will be achieved through this initiative will further strengthen our trade and economic relationship with Costa Rica.”

The youth mobility initiative allows participants to live, work or travel in the other country for up to one year.

“The initiative offers participants an experience that will enhance their personal and professional development, giving them a competitive edge in the global job market,” said Minister Van Loan.

The International Experience Canada initiative seeks to foster close bilateral relations between Canada and other countries. This memorandum of understanding marks Canada’s 30th bilateral arrangement on youth mobility. In 2009, more than 73,000 youth from Canada and around the world participated in the International Experience Canada initiative.
